ok, this is the last email of beijing (i think). in the slow cafe and my e's and a's won't always work on this keyboard. today was a great day at the summer palac and we took a boat out. a group of four of us hiked up to the old buddhist temple, where the decor was outstaning. smll ceramic buddhas decorated the outsides. the ones nearer to the bottom (about 8 feet from the ground) were missing their heads. they had been takn off during the cultural revolotion. i have pictures. then, two of us found ourselves celebrities as chinese people from the rural parts of china lined up to get their pictures taken with us white girls. as i have red hair and the other girl was blonde, they were fascinated. i felt like something at an amusement park. it was all very fun and we all laughed and joked together in our differnt languages!

we then visited the pearl market which was indoors and so busy and full. i got a few small treasures, but was a little tired from the heat and the schedule we are keeping. tomorrow is the great wall and the ming tombs!!! my professor has brought bubbles to blow from the wall. isn't that great!!?? we are all pretty tired but we don't want to miss anything. so far, everything has been good. i had to buy another instant camera today.

monday, we travel to chengdu for the week and then to xi'an at the end of next week. chengdu is more tropical and in the southern part of china. spicy dishes will be served. we have foun out that our accomodations have air conditioning! yay!

i am starting to recognize the roads we take and the signs we see around town. it's pretty amazing. anyway, i am tired and i have to make some calls as i left my wallet in th restaurant in my tired state. (our chinese guide called them and of course, it is not there) luckily, i had already spent my daily allotment at the pearl market and all my important stuff (except my credit card and about $10 us dollars) were in my money belt. so, you see, i have prepared for this very moment the entire trip, but i thought i would lose it to a pickpocket, not my spaciness! ugh! so, i have gotten all the phone numbers from the internt (love it!!) and i am set to go. so, don't worry mom and dad--i am ok!!

so, i hope all is well. take care everyone.
love,
ingrid
