Wednesday, June 13, 2001 10:15 PM hello everyone,
i am now feeling rested and back to normal for the rest of the trip. so, let's see....yesterday, we went to a middle school. it was the best middle school in the sichuan provence. private school and some students stay over. (does anyone notice a pattern? we are visiting the best of the best...!) anyway, a small group of us went to the orchestra. it was really good.

we then went to downtown chengdu. there are all these painted slogans all about town about keeping the city nice and clean with integrity. we went to this restaurant where they serve 20 "snacks" in small bowls to each of us. they were all very different. one dish was chicken feet. i tried a small bite. the texture was too strange for me. there was also a kind of "minty" noodle with bean paste rolled inside. at first, it tasted really good, so i put the rest of it into my mouth. by then, the flavor just was too minty and too strange. like minty bread dough. ugh! the only familiar thing was the fried sesame rice dough with bean paste inside that you get at dim sum. yum, yum...!

after that, we went shopping. we couldn't find the night market (sadly we saw it on the way home) so i got some cd's. there is no copyright here in china, so many people are getting american cd's for less than $1 american dollar. also, they already have pearl harbor and moulon rouge on dvd or vcd. (who knows if they will actually be able to play them on american machines). i got some techno. one dj mix by kelly chan and i think it will suck.

today we went to the panda research base. we were able to get so close to the pandas and the base wasn't busy at all. they were so cute, especially the babies! i tried not to take a whole roll of pandas, but it was tough. the other interesting thing is that the panda base didn't have the barrage of souveniers that the other places have had. only some post cards and picture books.

miss you all!
love,
ingrid
