so, last night some of the chinese studenst took three
of us to hot pot. these students are mostly graduate
students studying english or history so their english
is great. they all pick english names, and so we went
out with constance, linda, stella, rocky, david and
windou. (yeah, i don't know about windou, it is his
chinese name and i guess he thought it sounded english
enough to keep). they took us to a very local place
for hot pot. probably never sees tourists except the peace corps.
so, you sit
at a table with a big pot in the middle. the pot is
split in two with really spicy water/oil on one side
and less spicy on the other. then, you get up and go
to get all the foods to cook in the hot pot. fishes,
meats, veggies. all in the same area, and it made me
and my digestive system a little nervous. but, i
reminded myself that it would all be boiled in
oil/water....
so, i got some sea vegetables and some tiger lily
flower buds as well as some tofu. others picked fish
and chicken feet. we all sat down and dumped our foods
in the pot. after the boiling, you take your food into
a small bowl with garlic and pepper oil (i refrained
from adding the salt and msg to mine). it was so
great! very hot!! someone brought me a banana. so, i
peeled it and put it into the pot. fried bananas,
right? well, this caused all the chinese students to
laugh at me! evidentally, bananas are not to be put
into the hot pot!
there were some seniors celebrating their upcoming
graduation, much like americans do, but drinking and
talking loudly and taking pictures. they were all over
floor trying to get everyone into a picture behind us
and let me tell you, i was nervous enough to step on
this floor with my shoes on. you see, all of the stuff
from your table that you don't want, you just drop
onto the floor. banana peels, peppers, meat bones,
seeds, you name it! i'd hate to have to clean that up
the next day!
